Spring is here!

Our class spent some time on Monday visiting these 2 day old chicks. The students fed them, played with them and witnessed them get cozy with some of their shoes. It was a lovely experience.

April update

Dear families,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter!
April is going to be a busy and exciting month!

In Language Arts, the students are going to work on the good copy of their Fables. They will peer-edit and conference with the teacher. As you know, our class is participating in a 100 book scholastic reading challenge. A green reading record sheet was sent home today for the students to log their read books. I would like the students to read chapter books with 60 or more pages to help build their fluency skills. This challenge will last from April 7th to May 7th. During this time, the weekly reading log will not be sent home. There will not be a new spelling list this week; we will start List 26 on Monday April 13th. Our next writing focus will be on persuasive paragraphs. We will also be reading texts about urban and rural communities to connect with our social studies curriculum.

In Mathematics, we are exploring multiplication. The focus of this chapter is on the conceptual understanding of multiplication as repeated addition of groups/sets. These groupings are modeled using arrays or jumps on a number line. For the grade 3 students, the focus will be on using skip counting and repeated addition to develop an understanding of the multiplication facts up to 7x7. We will be having a three minute multiplication drill each Friday to help build computational skills. A practice sheet will be given to each student on the Tuesday of the week to help prepare for Friday.

Thank you for your continued support,

Sincerely,
Ms. Bertone

Important Reminders:

-The whole month of April is dedicated to our 100 book Reading Challenge: keep those pages turning!
-As you read, think about the 5 story elements (characters, setting, plot, conflict and resolution) don't forget the big idea!
-Parents, please sign agendas every evening to ensure all homework is complete

February 23-March 13 Update

Dear families,

In Language, we are beginning our unit on fables.  These timeless stories will help us delve into the magical world of fantasy while learning about morals, classical characters, and the paradigm of right and wrong.  This unit will help students understand elements such as: plot, character, and setting.  After the March break, each student will compose his/her own fable and publish it with creative illustrations and narration.

We will be visiting Pape Public Library on  Tuesday March 3rd to explore Fables :)

In Math, we are learning about 2-D geometry (Chapter 7). The students will learn about tangrams, polygon properties, angles, congruent shapes and how to sort polygons based on their properties. At home, challenge your child to locate congruent shapes and identify the angles as either (right angles, acute angles or obtuse angles).

Have a great couple of weeks everyone!

February Update

Dear Families,

In Math, we will be finishing chapter 6 this week by engaging in some cooperative addition and subtraction activities and problem solving. Next week, we will begin chapter 7 which is 2-D Geometry. There will be a math assessment on Wednesday February 18th  on addition and subtraction of three digit numbers. Please visit the Nelson Math website for some practice questions to help prepare for the test. A great home-school activity would be to have your child estimate the cost of the groceries in the buggy each week and/or calculate change with money amounts up to $10.00.

In Science, we will be completing our unit on strong and stable structures. The students understand the big ideas and have worked diligently to construct strong cube structures to hold a load. They researched a famous structure for their projects and will presenting their findings this week. The last task will be to construct a strong and stable bridge made out of newspaper. This will take place next Tuesday the 17th during the afternoon. I can’t wait to see what they come up with!

In Religion, our discussions and activities will surround the topics of Love as it is the virtue of the month. Have your child explain what Loveuary means.

In Language, we will discuss Black History Month and learn about agents of change. Students will read and write about the meaning of freedom, equality and justice. We are focusing on spelling list 20 this week and we will not have a spelling list the week after the Family day weekend.
